How long can a newborn kittens go without eating before the mother starts feeding them?

Thomas C asked:

The mother kitten is only about 6months old and doesn’t seem to know what to do with them and the kittens haven’t started nursing from her and they were probably born at least 8 or so hours ago.
Should we wait a little bit longer to see if she’s gonna feed them or should we start nursing them?

Put the mother in the box with her kittens and watch her. Call a vet to find out about feeding kittens properly as well as finding out if they sell kitten formula.

I would suggest that you call a vet and you can also get a supplement formula and start feeding them yourself. A mommy cat normally feeds them within minutes. You can try gently to get her to lay down and put the kittens to the ******* and if that don’t work go get the formula.

Healthy kittens will begin nursing as soon as they are born.
Sometimes the mother is delivering a second or third kitten and the first have already attached their selves to a ******. Have you tried placing the babies on a ******?
Please call a vet. They deteriorate quickly and if she hasn’t started nursing yet, she most likely isn’t going to.
    Hope this helped.

I just went through this 2 months ago.
I put the mother and her babies in a room alone with clean bedding and I could tell she was scared so I put the kittens to her nipples, The mother tried to get away at first, but I made sure the door was shut and I made her lay their for awhile as I putted her and scratched under chin, well you know how to relax your cat. but I didn’t leave her until she was comfortable with it.And it took about a week of reassurance but she finally got to where she wouldn’t let me hold them, because she took care of them. Hope this helps

i also went through this with a mama. i ended up having to put her and all the kittens in a cat carrier where she couldn’t get away from them. i then sat right by the carrier and talked to her. it took about 30 minutes but she nursed them. she also turned out to be a good mama. if that doesn’t work, you could call the humane society and see if they have a cat that is currently nursing. a lot of times, mama cats share the nursing duties. good luck!
