So our momma kitty just had kittens about 4 weeks ago. She has recently decided to not feed as much. We think it is time to switch to kitty food, but we are not sure what kind they might need. Could you possibly tell me if there is any special food they need?

Science diet kitten chow and mothers milk.

A quality brand of canned kitten food. Just leave a plate on the floor with them, mom will teach them how to eat it. You can leave out a bowl of dry kitten kibble too. They’ll learn very quickly how to eat both.
Brands to avoid using: Science Diet, Purina, Friskies, Whiskas, Fancy Feast, Meow Mix, any other cheap grocery store brand.
Brands to use: Wellness, Innova EVO, Artemis, Felidae, Merrick, etc.

When they are this young your best bet is to pickup some canned food from the vet such as hill p/d or hills a/d and mix it with kitten milk and a make a really runny/soupy mixture of food for them to eat. At first you may have to put a bit in a syringe to get them to eat or put some on your fingers. I wouldn’t use any store bought food for them at this stage as they really need to be on a rich diet.

well i have a cat that had kittens recently and she had before as well , if your mama cat doesnt want to feed anymore you will need to buy the kitten milk(Just like mothers milk) that comes in a small juice box container. then you should stary kitten chow about 6 weeks in to there life. This is what we did anyway. One reason was because the mom wouldnt feed kittens anymore and one of the kittens was sick so it worked for me hopefully this helps

They should still be with their mamma, she’ll let them nurse some..
but yes.. now is about the time they start “experimenting” with kitten chow.. you can moisten it with broth or water

High quality grain-free canned food. Wellness is the best and you can find it at petco and other specialty pet food stores. Raw chicken is a good supplement food. My cat has never had any issues with it.

If momma cat is ready to wean , You need to get them onto a healthy canned food.
I recommend varying the diet with a constant rotation of accepted canned foods that your cat enjoys. If you do this, and allow your cat the same assortment they would have in nature when eating mice, bugs, birds and rabbits, your cats’ digestive system won’t be so sensitive and you won’t have to run around looking for a specific brand when your store is out. You will have a nice variety to choose from instead.
Canned foods I recommend for your rotation:

Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. It’s completely species inappropriate.
All small domestic cats descended from desert cats. In the wild, desert cats derive their entire liquid intake from their prey. They do not have a thirst mechanism because they don’t need it when eating a species appropriate diet. They get all they need from what they eat. Additionally water was usually not available to them in their desert climate. So they do not often drink water. Regular ol’ house cats have descended from those same wild desert cats.
So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it needs from dry food and it’s almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Water fountains are encouraged to TRY to get your cat to drink more and your kitty may even enjoy it, but it will never meet its water intake needs drinking from a bowl.
Deadly feline illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, allergies, Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), bladder stones, kidney stones, urinary tract blockages and Urinary Tract Infections (FLUTD), with and without deadly crystals run rampant these days. Cats are not taking in enough water to stave them off. Proper water intake through a species appropriate diet alone can prevent most of these conditions.
Overall, wet is all around better for any cats diet, be it canned or Raw and they should never be fed dry cereal kibble if we wish to most closely match their wild nutritional and dietary needs. Kibble meets our needs… not our cats.

I foster kittens all the time for the SPCA. What we use is Kitten Milk Replacement (KMR) It’s powder that you mix with warm water for the kittens. You can buy this at PetSmart. You can give this to them to drink and also you can take a few spoonfuls of wet cat food (like in a can) and mix it with the milk. Make sure you feed them enough and also make sure that all of them are eating. We had a few that wouldn’t eat and we had to bottle-feed them. If you have any questions, ask a vet or your local SPCA.
