When should I start feeding newborn puppies soild food?

zimmy_zimmy215 asked:

My dog just had puppies about three weeks ago, and I’m not sure when to give them solid food. I’ve looked at a couple of websites, but they never said when to feed them solid food.

Talk to a vet or a reputable breeder about it. And please get your dog spayed as soon as possible. With 2-5 million pets put down every year, only professional breeders trying to advance the quality of the breed should be breeding.

Usually when the puppies are too small, I is advised not to feed it with solid food such as bones, Istead you should try giving it pieces of bread dripped in a lot of milk(not too liquid) or soft food such as cheese. You may start giving it solid food at 8 months because I have friends who have puppies of about 5 months. This will prevent them from having indigestion.

You can start feeding puppies solid food at 3 weeks. We also at 4 weeks of age took our puppies from their mother and all are healthy and doing fine. As long as the pups are eating solid food give it to them it will take a lot of stress off your mother dog.

you can start as early as a month but you can just lookk at their teeth then if they are barely out put a little of water over the food to make it good and soft for them to chew! then about like every week just add less and less water to get them used to chewing! that is how i did it!

Start giving them moist dog food, no canned food just dry food with a small amount of warm tap water, at 5 weeks, it maybe another week before they will try it, but they should be eating the dry food completly and not nursing by 7 weeks. Remeber you will have to start taking mom away for periods to wean them from nursing.

Newborn puppies need to nurse for a minimum of 6 weeks. They should NOT be weened until then. Besides, mom will help to let you know, ’cause once their sharp little baby teeth come in, she won’t let them nurse. Then you can start to introduce solids to them.

Puppies can start on soaked kibble at 3 weeks of age, but should also continue nursing until the dam is ready to wean them. Puppies need to stay with their litter until they are at least 8 weeks of age in order to learn proper dog behavior. Dog removed from the litter earlier are more likely to have behavior and aggression problems.

If they are still getting plenty of milk from their mama, they will probably not want any food yet. If there is a large litter, it is best to get them eating from about the age they are now. Normally I start feeding my pups between 4-5 weeks.
